About

Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve is one of Buenos Aires' great surprises — 350 hectares of wetlands, grasslands, and riverside trails just a 10-minute walk from Puerto Madero and the city center. It's the kind of place that genuinely resets the travel pace: no crowds, no entrance fees, and the unmistakable feeling of being somewhere wild.

For families with kids who love animals and nature, this place is a revelation. The reserve hosts over 300 bird species, and on any given morning walk you're likely to encounter herons, egrets, ibis, parrots, and more, often within arm's reach of the trails. The birdwatching here is legitimately world-class and entirely free.

Older kids with any interest in wildlife will be genuinely captivated; even younger children who don't know what a heron is will react to seeing one up close.

The trails are wide and generally flat, making stroller navigation possible on the main paths, though some secondary trails are rougher. Early morning visits catch the most animal activity — birds are feeding, nutrias (large rodents related to beavers) are visible along the water's edge, and the whole reserve feels alive in a way it doesn't at midday.

Bring your own water and snacks — there are no vendors inside the reserve. Bug repellent is useful in the warmer months. The entrance near Puerto Madero is walking distance from some of Buenos Aires' best restaurants, making it easy to pair a morning nature walk with a good lunch afterward.
