About
Diver Ed's Dive-In Theatre is one of Bar Harbor's most original and beloved family experiences, combining a boat tour with a live underwater show that is genuinely unlike anything else on MDI. The concept is simple and brilliant: a professional diver descends into the cold waters of Frenchman Bay while families aboard the vessel watch via an underwater camera broadcast to an onboard monitor. The diver narrates what they find on the seafloor in real time, retrieving actual marine specimens — sea urchins, starfish, crabs, sea cucumbers, and other Gulf of Maine creatures — and bringing them to the surface for hands-on examination by the audience.
For children, this live interaction with real marine life from their local ecosystem is far more impactful than a standard aquarium visit. The creatures are shown, discussed in plain language appropriate for younger audiences, and then returned to the bay. The experience runs approximately 90 minutes and strikes an excellent balance between entertainment and genuine natural science education.
Children who might be intimidated by snorkeling or open-water swimming can access the underwater world safely from the boat deck. Tours operate in summer and book up quickly — advance reservations are essential for peak July and August dates. The departure point is in Bar Harbor village, making it easy to combine with a waterfront lunch before or after the tour.

Why Kids Love It
Diver Ed's brings the ocean floor to life with a real diver descending into Frenchman Bay while families watch on an underwater camera — it's like a live nature documentary starring creatures pulled from the deep right in front of you
Pro Tips from Parents
- The diver retrieves actual sea creatures including sea urchins, starfish, and crabs for up-close examination — this is not a passive viewing experience
- Children with a fear of the ocean or marine animals may find the experience more manageable here than on open-water tours
- Dress warmly — the boat is open and Frenchman Bay is cold even in summer
- Book online well in advance; this is one of Bar Harbor's most popular family activities
What to Bring
- Warm layers and a windproof jacket
- Camera
- Sea sickness medication if your children are prone (the boat is relatively stable)
