About
Bar Island is the tidal island accessible from Bar Harbor via the famous gravel land bridge that appears at low tide. For families, combining the land bridge crossing with the island's short hiking trail creates one of the most memorable free adventures in the entire Acadia region.
Once across, a wooded trail winds uphill through birch and spruce trees to a rocky summit with sweeping panoramic views of Frenchman Bay, the Bar Harbor waterfront, and the mountains of Acadia in the distance. The hike is only about half a mile each way, making it very manageable for school-age kids. The reward at the top — watching ferries and lobster boats move through the bay while standing above the treetops — is genuinely spectacular.
The experience carries a built-in element of time pressure that kids find thrilling: you have a limited window before the tide returns and the bar submerges. Rangers have rescued visitors who lingered too long, so it's important to check the tide chart and plan conservatively. A good rule of thumb is to be heading back across the bar no later than 45 minutes before high tide.
Bar Island is not stroller-friendly due to the gravel bar and wooded trail. Best for kids ages 6 and up who can handle a short but rooty uphill walk. Admission is free — this is one of Bar Harbor's absolute highlights at zero cost.
