About
Sliding Rock is exactly what it sounds like — a 60-foot smooth granite slope with thousands of gallons of mountain water rushing over it every minute, ending in a deep swimming hole. You hike up to the top, sit down, and slide. It's simultaneously one of the simplest and most thrilling things you can do with kids in the Asheville area.
The experience is raw in a way that manufactured water parks aren't. The water is consistently 50-55 degrees regardless of air temperature, the rock is worn smooth by generations of visitors, and the drop into the pool at the bottom is legitimately bracing. Kids who are nervous at the top almost always come back for more once they've done it once.
Sliding Rock operates as a recreation area within Pisgah National Forest. A nominal fee ($5 per person) is collected during the main summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) and lifeguards are stationed at the pool. Outside of that window, it's free and unsupervised — the water is still flowing but use your own judgment.
Practical notes: changing rooms and restrooms are on-site. The parking area fills quickly on hot summer weekends — arrive before 10AM or you may end up parking roadside and walking a half-mile. Combine with Looking Glass Falls (10 minutes north) for a full half-day outing.

Why Kids Love It
Sliding Rock is a 60-foot natural water slide — a smooth, sloping rock face with 11,000 gallons of 50-degree mountain water pouring over it per minute. You sit at the top and slide down into an 8-foot-deep pool. It's completely natural, totally exhilarating, and one of the most memorable things you can do with kids in the Asheville area. Lifeguards are on duty in season.
Pro Tips from Parents
- The water is 50-55 degrees year-round — cold by any standard. Pack an old wetsuit or rash guard for younger kids who feel the cold more.
- Water shoes or sandals that strap on are essential — bare feet on the rocky approach are painful.
- Changing rooms and restrooms are on-site. Bring towels and a complete change of dry clothes — you will be soaked.
