About

Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest is 45 minutes southwest of Asheville and earns its spot on every Asheville family itinerary. The 60-foot falls drop in a single curtain into a wide pool at the base, and a short paved path from the roadside parking area takes you directly to the water's edge. No long hike, no special gear — just one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the eastern US, and you're standing in front of it within two minutes of parking.

For kids, the magic is in the immediacy. You can feel the mist from the viewing area, and in warmer months wading into the cold pool at the base is entirely permitted and extremely popular. Kids who are reluctant hikers will be happy here because there's essentially no hiking involved — yet the payoff is enormous.

The falls are part of Pisgah National Forest and there's no entry fee. The parking area is small (maybe 20 cars) so timing matters on summer weekends — arrive before 9AM or after 3PM, or visit on a weekday. The rest of the drive along US-276 through Pisgah Forest is itself beautiful, and Sliding Rock (a natural water slide, 10 minutes north) is an easy add-on that kids go absolutely crazy for.

Dress for getting wet. Even if you don't wade in, mist from the falls reaches the viewing area. Bring a change of clothes.

Why Kids Love It

Looking Glass Falls is a 60-foot waterfall that drops directly into a swimming hole accessible from a short paved path — you can walk right up to the base and feel the mist. It's one of the most dramatic and easily accessible waterfalls in the Southeast, and kids are immediately transfixed. In summer, wading in the pool below the falls is a highlight.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • The path from the parking area to the falls is paved and only about 100 feet — genuinely accessible for strollers and even grandparents.
  • Arrive before 9AM on summer weekends or the small parking area fills up. Weekdays are dramatically less crowded.
  • Combine this stop with Sliding Rock (10 minutes away) — a natural water slide where kids can ride down into a swimming pool.
