About
Texas Wildlife Park is a drive-through animal park outside Mountain Home, about 90 minutes northwest of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. If your kids love animals, this one's a winner. You drive your own car through open pastures while exotic and native Texas animals roam freely around you.
The whole point is interaction. Buy a bag of animal feed at the entrance (do this — don't skip it) and the animals will come right to your car windows. Zebras, longhorns, ostriches, deer, and all sorts of antelope species. Kids absolutely lose it when a longhorn pokes its head through the window.
The drive portion takes about an hour if you stop and interact with animals along the way. There are pull-off areas where you can park and let animals come to you. The education center at the end has hands-on exhibits where kids can touch antlers, learn about conservation, and see smaller animals up close.
Heads up: this is a fully outdoor experience. No air conditioning except your car, no indoor facilities beyond the education center, and no food for sale. Mountain Home is tiny — nearest real meals are Kerrville (20 min) or Fredericksburg (30 min). Pack snacks, water, and sunscreen.
The park has a 4.9 Google rating with 450+ reviews, which is earned. The owners clearly care about the animals and the experience. It's family-run and it shows in the best way.
Strollers are limited use since you're mostly in your car. The education center walkways are accessible, but the main event is the driving safari. Make sure kids use the restroom before starting.
Best time to go is early morning when animals are hungry and active, or late afternoon. Midday in summer, everything's sluggish in the Texas heat. Spring and fall visits are ideal.

Why Kids Love It
Animals walk right up to your car window. Kids go absolutely wild when a longhorn sticks its head through the window or a deer eats out of their hand. It feels like a real safari without the plane ticket. The education center's hands-on exhibits let kids touch antlers and learn about Texas wildlife up close.
