About
La Villette is the most ambitious family cultural park in Paris, a 136-acre campus in the 19th arrondissement that manages to house a world-class science museum, a giant spherical cinema, a concert venue, a real retired submarine, vast playgrounds, and a canal-side park all in one connected space. The Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is the anchor attraction — one of the largest science museums in Europe, with hands-on exhibits on space, mathematics, biology, technology, and the natural world spread across four floors. There is a dedicated children's area for ages 2 to 12 on the lower level with experiments designed for small hands and short attention spans.
The Géode, a mirrored steel sphere beside the museum, screens IMAX films on a hemispherical screen that genuinely overwhelms the senses. Outside, the park itself is free and features ten themed gardens and playgrounds spread along the Canal de l'Ourcq, each with a different design concept — a dragon playground, a wind garden, an acrobatics garden, and more. The Argonaute, a real French Navy submarine from 1958, sits permanently in the canal and can be toured for a small fee.
On summer evenings La Villette hosts open-air cinema screenings on the main lawn, a beloved Paris tradition. The whole campus is flat, fully stroller-accessible, and connected by multiple metro lines.
