About
The Aquarium Tropical at the Palais de la Porte Dorée is one of Paris's most underrated family destinations. Built in 1931 for the Colonial Exhibition, the building is an architectural landmark in its own right — a sweeping Art Deco palace with painted murals covering every surface. The aquarium inside is surprisingly impressive, with large tanks holding tropical fish from around the world, impressive shark displays and live crocodilians.
For families, the highlights are the touch tanks (seasonal), the giant freshwater tank with schools of colorful fish, and the crocodile pool on the lower level — kids tend to go wide-eyed at the crocs. The building's murals and history also make it interesting for adults, giving this visit more depth than a typical aquarium.
The museum is closed Mondays. On weekends it stays open until 7pm. Budget 1 to 2 hours for a thorough visit. Because it's less touristy than the big Paris attractions, it tends to be quieter and more relaxed — nice when you're traveling with kids who need space to move.
The Palais de la Porte Dorée also houses the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, which occupies the upper floors of the same building. It's included in admission if older kids or adults are interested.

Why Kids Love It
The Aquarium Tropical hides one of Paris's best-kept secrets inside a stunning 1930s Art Deco palace — massive tanks filled with tropical fish, sharks and crocodiles that kids can get surprisingly close to. The building itself is an experience, with painted murals and colonial-era exhibits that older kids find genuinely fascinating. And the entry price is way cheaper than most Paris attractions.
