About
Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve is a 787-acre Mecklenburg County natural area in east Charlotte — home to one of the most education-focused nature facilities in the Charlotte park system. The combination of a well-staffed indoor nature center with live animals and an extensive outdoor trail network makes it a better educational experience than most of the other county nature areas.
The indoor facility houses live native animals in naturalistic enclosures: box turtles, corn snakes, rat snakes, Carolina anoles, red-backed salamanders, and various frog species. The naturalist staff use these animals for active education — holding demonstrations, explaining habitat requirements, and answering the kinds of questions that kids who have just seen a snake for the first time always ask.
The trail system covers about 5 miles through forest, upland meadow, and creek habitats. The creek sections are the most wildlife-productive: wood thrushes, Eastern towhees, and barred owls are regular sightings in the wooded sections; the meadow areas have excellent butterfly activity in mid-summer. The trail grades are moderate — accessible for kids 5 and up without difficulty, manageable for younger kids with a carrier.
The programming calendar is the key differentiator from other Charlotte nature areas. Reedy Creek runs regular naturalist-led programs: guided bird walks, owl pellet dissection sessions, insect ID workshops, and seasonal nature programs. Check the Mecklenburg County Parks website for current programming.
Admission is entirely free. The center closes at 5PM, making weekday afternoon visits tight for working parents — plan for weekend or weekday morning visits.
