About

Tacos Rigo is a Cancun institution: the place locals and savvy tourists go for authentic, cheap, delicious tacos right in the Hotel Zone. Located at Kilometer 8 on Boulevard Kukulcan (next to the Aloft hotel), this no-frills taco joint has been serving some of the best street-style tacos in the Hotel Zone for years, and it is hands-down the best value meal your family will eat on vacation.

The menu is straightforward: tacos with your choice of filling, plus quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, and birria. The standout is the al pastor: pork marinated in achiote and spices, roasted on a vertical trompo (like a gyro spit) with a pineapple on top, then sliced to order and served on a soft corn tortilla with cilantro, onion, and a squeeze of lime. It is sweet, savory, slightly smoky, and absolutely addictive.

Other popular fillings include arrachera (skirt steak), chicken, birria (slow-braised beef), and for the adventurous, lengua (tongue) and cachete (beef cheek).

For families, the value is almost comically good compared to everything else in the Hotel Zone. Tacos run $2-4 each, and two or three make a full meal. A family of 4 can eat generously: tacos, quesadillas, drinks, for $30-35 total. That same meal at a Hotel Zone resort restaurant would cost $100+.

Kids who are picky can get plain cheese quesadillas, simple chicken tacos, or a burrito. The birria tacos come with a consomme (broth) for dipping that even reluctant eaters tend to love. The salsa bar has options ranging from mild green tomatillo to face-melting habanero. Steer young kids toward the mild options and let tweens and teens experiment at their own risk.

The aguas frescas (horchata, jamaica, tamarind) are perfect kid drinks: sweet, refreshing, and non-carbonated. Most kids prefer the horchata.

The restaurant has indoor and semi-outdoor seating, with counter service (no waiter). It is casual to the point of being almost fast-food in format, but the food quality is genuinely excellent. The atmosphere is no-frills, loud, and busy. Nobody bats an eye at messy toddlers or loud teenagers.

Tacos Rigo opens at 8 AM and stays open until midnight, making it viable for breakfast (they serve a morning buffet), lunch, or late dinner. The busiest period is 7-9 PM, when a short line forms at the counter, but it moves quickly.

If you eat at one non-resort restaurant during your Cancun trip, make it Tacos Rigo. Your wallet and your taste buds will thank you.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Late lunch (2-4 PM) or late dinner (9-11 PM) to avoid the biggest crowds. Breakfast is also great with a morning buffet. The line can get long during prime dinner hours (7-9 PM), but it moves fast.

Wait Times

5-15 minutes during peak dinner hours; minimal wait at off-peak times

Nearby Food

Tacos Rigo IS the food destination, but it is surrounded by Hotel Zone dining. Senor Frog's (steps away) is loud and kid-friendly. Carlos'n Charlie's is similar. For a step up, Lorenzillo's (lobster, nearby at Km 10.5) is within a short taxi ride. The Aloft hotel next door has a rooftop bar if parents want a drink after.

Why Kids Love It

Tacos Rigo is the real deal: authentic Mexican street-style tacos served fast, cheap, and in the middle of the Hotel Zone. Kids love it because the food is simple, delicious, and there's no waiting forever for a waiter to bring the check. The taco station is visible from the counter, so kids can watch the cooks slice meat off the trompo (rotating spit for al pastor), grill arrachera on the flat-top, and assemble each taco with fresh cilantro, onion, and salsa.

Kids who are picky eaters can get plain cheese quesadillas or simple chicken tacos. More adventurous eaters can try pastor (pork with pineapple), birria (slow-cooked beef in a rich broth), or even lengua (tongue), and bragging about eating tongue at school earns serious street cred. The horchata (cinnamon rice drink) is sweet and creamy, and practically every kid asks for a second glass.

The casual, counter-service atmosphere means nobody cares if your toddler drops taco on the floor or your teen is on their phone. It is relaxed, loud, and unpretentious.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • This is the best cheap meal in the Hotel Zone, period. A family of 4 eats for $30 here vs. $100+ at the resort restaurants next door.
  • Al pastor (pork with pineapple off the rotating spit) is the signature order, get it first
  • The salsa bar has multiple heat levels. Guide kids toward the mild green salsa and away from the habanero.
  • Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (8 AM to midnight), it works for any meal
  • There is a downtown location too (Av. Palenque 50), but the Hotel Zone location at Km 8 is more convenient for tourists

What to Bring

  • Cash (pesos preferred, but cards are accepted)
  • Napkins or wet wipes (it is a taco joint, things get messy)
  • An appetite
  • A sense of adventure for trying new taco fillings
  • Hand sanitizer

  • Tacos Rigo is already the best-value restaurant in the Hotel Zone with tacos starting at $2 each.
  • Skip the burritos and quesadillas if budget is tight; the tacos are the star.
  • Order aguas frescas instead of bottled drinks.
  • The breakfast buffet is a good value if you need fuel for a day of activities.
  • Avoid the most expensive proteins (arrachera) if budget is key; pastor and chicken are cheaper and equally delicious.
