About
The River Arts District runs along the French Broad River in south Asheville and is one of the most interesting ways to spend a few hours with curious kids. Over 200 working artists have studios in the district's converted warehouses and industrial spaces — and crucially, many of them work with their doors open, letting visitors watch the process in real time.
For kids, seeing art being made is more compelling than seeing finished art in a gallery. Watch a glassblower turn a molten blob into a vase. Watch a potter center clay on a wheel. Watch a painter mid-canvas. These aren't demonstrations staged for tourists — they're working studios where artists are genuinely in the middle of their craft.
The district stretches roughly a mile along Riverside Drive, with clusters of studios in former warehouse buildings. Parking is easier than downtown Asheville, and the walking between buildings is pleasant. Not all studios are open on all days — weekend mornings tend to have the most activity.
The twice-annual RAD Studio Strolls (spring and fall) have nearly all studios open simultaneously, which is the best possible time to visit if your trip timing allows.
The food scene in the RAD is genuinely excellent. White Duck Taco is a local institution and handles kids well. Vivian, a French-inspired restaurant in a converted warehouse, is surprisingly family-friendly at lunch. Several coffee shops and casual spots fill out the options.
This is one of those Asheville experiences that doesn't feel like a conventional tourist activity — it's just the city's creative ecosystem on display.

Why Kids Love It
The River Arts District is a mile-long stretch of old industrial buildings along the French Broad River that has been converted into studios for over 200 working artists. Kids can watch glassblowers, potters, painters, and sculptors actually making things — not finished pieces in a gallery, but work in progress. The hands-on creative energy is infectious.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Look for the glass studios specifically — watching a glassblower at work is mesmerizing for kids and adults alike.
- The RAD Brew + Bev area has family-friendly restaurants including White Duck Taco and Vivian, both excellent for lunch with kids.
- Many studios let kids hold finished pieces or watch the process up close — just ask politely. Most artists love a curious audience.
