Catawba Science Center

Catawba Science Center in downtown Hickory is one of the better regional science museums in western North Carolina — a genuinely triple-threat facility that houses a science museum, a live animal aquarium, and a full planetarium under one roof. The combination gives families with kids across a range of ages multiple things to engage with on a single visit.

The aquarium section is the perennial crowd-pleaser with younger kids. Live touch tanks allow children to handle marine invertebrates — the kind of hands-on animal interaction that creates the vivid memories kids talk about long after the visit.
